Live Review: Avenged Sevenfold at the Plymouth Pavilions

Plymouth Pavilions
November 6th 2010
With Stone Sour

After a storming hour from Stone Sour beforehand, the packed Pavilions had high hopes for Avenged Sevenfold. The lights dimmed, the curtain dropped, the opening to Nightmare started over the PA, and the crowd went into raptures.

Synyster Gates led the five-piece out on stage, confidently strutting across in a way that only he can do and still back it up with his guitar prowess. The backdrop was of three gates, in turn reading A7X and in between the gates were pillars, with each song flames appeared from the pillars and gates to add to the already incredible atmosphere inside the Pavilions. Without hesitating, Gates and co. went straight into the guitar parts of Nightmare with CD quality sound.

Avenged were clearly up for a party in Plymouth, these guys are born performers and had the crowd in the palm of their hands for the whole hour. M. Shadows was flawless, if a little quiet in some places, but Nightmare was a true spectacle to be part of.

The set was a mix of songs both old and new, but as the time limit was very strict, it swayed more towards the new songs from latest album Nightmare. Critical Acclaim was to some extent a surprise inclusion in the set, but Avenged played it straight after opening song Nightmare to many adoring fans who echoed the words of Shadows. Welcome to the Family, the second track from Nightmare was played after Shadows welcomed all the fans in the room to the extended family that is the Avenged Sevenfold fan base.

The Beast and the Harlot was the next song to play, from 2007 album City of Evil and it was note perfect, this was probably second nature to them, but still they gave their all. Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates really looked like they were enjoying the gig, with left-handed Zacky standing beside Gates several times for the classic Avenged Sevenfold pose.

The backdrop slowly moved away, to reveal another backdrop of the group in a huddle, with Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan tattooed on ones back, this initiated a poignant memorial to Jimmy, who sadly passed away in December 2009. The song that followed was the song that Synyster Gates wrote in memory of The Rev, So Far Away and you could tell straight off that everybody was emotional during the performance, this was one hundred percent from the heart and a fitting song to how they must feel having to go through such a painful time.

Afterlife was also a part of the tribute to Jimmy as well, and again it was memorable – not that any of the set was forgettable – but there was something about the two songs in Jimmy's name, they just had that extra something about them, they really wanted to do this for The Rev.

As a final song, Shadows asked the crowd to choose. The band were already geared up to play Almost Easy, but when Shadows passed his microphone to a girl in the crowd she chose Bat Country out of the two options, a fine choice! After a quick switch of guitars Shadows bellowed into the mic like a man possessed, despite doctors warnings after he has previously burst a blood vessel in his throat. The entire song was astounding, Mike Portnoy really stepped up to the plate for Avenged, and he got a special thanks from all the band during the show.

It was an honour to catch Avenged Sevenfold live, and just to experience the vibe they give off, and the energy they take on stage is just mind blowing, a truly memorable event.

READ: Brand New Interview With M Shadows In Spanish Metal Hammer.

20 minutes had almost passed since the end of the show when an exhaustive M. Shadows led us to his dressing room to do a quick interview on news of the band and their upcoming show in Spain in late October. The tickets are selling out almost everywhere while the organization reserves bigger and bigger venues. Shadows is slightly less than the perfect gentleman, even after the rush that represents facing a crowd of 8,000 people. The man is unfazed and his ego doesn’t seem to be slightly raised.

Why have you decided to participate in the Uproar Rockstar Tour instead of making your own American tour as headliners, which would take advantage of the fact that your album reached number one on the Billboard charts?
Having Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold on the same show means that people will pay more, because it’s a pack of several bands. The developer sees it as a better tour because there are two big headliners, and how the industry is right now, they want to make sure people will come. They want to ensure that there will be kids out there at the shows. But for us, the tour has nothing to do with money. We agreed to do the tour when we did, not knowing if we wanted to turn back due to the death of Jimmy. When we saw that the lineup included Hellyeah, Stone Sour and Disturbed we went for it, because all these bands are friends of ours and we knew that the tour would be like a healing process for us. The tour was closed long before we had a number one album. Nobody knew that this would happen. But anyway, this is a very good tour for us.

It’s a very hard feeling to get on stage and see that Jimmy is not there. How do you feel when you go out on stage now? Do you try to forget it?
We try to forget about it until we reach a particular point of the song and we realize we are singing about him. There are good days and bad days. I always try to remind myself what Jimmy meant to me when I sing songs for him. I’ll never forget, but things have changed. We all operated as friends and not having him around is devastating. Everything … from going to the bar together, or listening to him screaming in his hotel room and not letting anyone sleep… missing it all sucks. It sucks to be without him. Going on stage without him sucks. He was a dude who never lost a touch of energy in the eleven years that we played together. The only time he lost the rhythm in a concert was when the technicians that controlled the theatrical smoke went too far with it, and he fainted on his kit. We turned and he was half dead, because he had no oxygen (laughs). He was our best friend and all we had with him is never coming back.

I’m very sorry about his death.
Thanks. Really, thanks.

Did you guys know he had a drug problem?
Yes, since we were young, he tried everything. I still remember the first cigarette we smoked together when we were 12. I also remember the first beer we had together and from there on we never stopped drinking beer. But I also remember the first time he had acid. I remember all the first times. He wasn’t the kind of guy that had drugs because he was a rock star. He had been experimenting with drugs like any other high-school kid since ever. He always was the kind of guy that if I would’ve asked to be sober, he would accompany me and also be sober. But if someone entered the room and went “hey! want some drugs?” he always had fun with that person. But the time came when we had to send him to rehab twice. We thought we had him under control regarding illegal drugs, and as a results, he dies from a overdoses of a prescription medicine. He had an eye operation, he took his medication, then drank some beer and it ended there.

Well, look at Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. He had been the perfect example of sobriety for two decades, then had surgery on his leg, he began taking painkillers and derailed again..
Exactly. It’s crazy. Those drugs are more dangerous than many other things. It’s crazy. Sometimes I’m pissed off because many of my friends have died and returned to life after medical care. They’ve had a second chance and still continue taking drugs without remedy. But Jimmy only had one chance and that was it. Jimmy saved the life of one of our friends in a hotel room, because the dude had overdosed with drugs. Jimmy was the one who brought him back to life, called the ambulance and everything else. And now he is still alive and Jimmy is dead because of prescription medicine…

On these occasions is when I think about Ozzy Osbourne and how is he even still alive…
Surprising right? I know what you mean. It’s crazy ..

At first you thought about leaving the band?
We didn’t think about the band. We could not believe it. When I got home there were about 75 people. I was about two hours from my house when my wife gave me the news and when I got there I found a lot of people. I cried all the way home, because I was being taken home. And to arrive and find all these people .. it sucked.

We would not let go of each other for the next two weeks. We did not want to go anywhere, we wanted nothing. We just wanted to be together. Everyone knew what had happened, it was in the newspapers, on TMZ.com and elsewhere. But the last thing I wanted was to talk about it.

The album was recorded and the drum parts were also recorded by Jimmy, so we decided to go ahead and take little steps. We do not know whether we will or we will not do another album. For now we only want to promote this record and honor his legacy. Then, we’ll see ..

As for Mike Portnoy becoming the new drummer for the band … Who called who?
Basically, Mike was in contact with us all the time when he knew about Jimmy. Before that, we had maintained a friendship for years and talked regularly. He was a fan of ours and we are fans of him and after Jimmy died he would always be in touch with us. A couple of weeks later I talked to the others to see if we could make the record with someone who Jimmy respected and honored. I automatically thought of Mike. We called him, we said yes right away, and said he would be delighted. We met at NAMM in Los Angeles, we gave him a demo and he called us and said he could not wait to play this material. Then we caught a studio and recorded it.

I think Mike respected the parts of the demo that Jimmy had recorded. Was it his or your decision?
No, we told him how it had to be. We wanted it to be like Jimmy had imagined. We love progressive music and we love Dream Theater, but we have a very clear vision of what we want. If Jimmy would’ve wanted to play more of the account in the songs, he would have done it, but we like the 1-2 tempo, we have been influenced a lot by Pantera. We told Mike to focus on what was in the demo and when he played it, he was super conscious and then he added something of his own.

I’ve never seen Mike more happy on stage than at today’s show. Two months ago I saw him playing with Dream Theather in Canada along with Iron Maiden and he looked bored. Today he was very motivated. Do you feel responsible for his departure from Dream Theater?
He told us that that was something we had been thinking since some time ago. It would have happened anyway. I know he likes to be on stage, he likes what is around us, we have a number one… he is enjoying all that. We will tour around the world and we are selling a lot of tickets.

I think what happened is that he realized that not everyone in a band is supposed to hate each-other. In his band he doesn’t get along very well with the rest, and they do what they do for business. We are good friends, we go out, we love each-other a lot … we don’t hide in our hotel rooms… Tomorrow we will be all day hanging around with our wives and friends. I think he saw it and thought “this is what I want and if I want to leave Dream Theater I’ll do it because I’ve found something that makes me happy.”

Is he going to be a permanent member of the band?
We are taking baby steps. At the moment all we will do is record and tour and nothing more. We’re not looking for our Jason Newsted. We have one of the best drummers in the world playing with us and we are grateful. But it is too early for us and we don’t want to capitalize the death of Jimmy. When the time comes to think about what we will do with the future of the band we will see. But we are not yet ready for a new member.

You have managed to get that all promoters in Spain to fight for you. I thought you would fill a small room for 1000 people, but you have scored for a room with capacity for 4000…
You know what’s happening? We’ve noticed that everywhere we do well, but in Europe we haven’t done enough tours. We’ve played everywhere as headliners in Europe and we opened for Metallica or Iron Maiden. That’s why we left from Jon Jackson’s agency, because we didn’t want to headline anymore. They wanted us to tour with Judas Priest and with Motley Crue.. and I said “we’re headlining around the world except in Europe.” So in the end we said “to hell “and started from scratch in Europe. We told the developers: “we’ll bring a lot of people, if you want to start advertising in small places, it’s okay, but keep reserves in bigger places” In Findandia went something like: we got a place for 1500 people and we have already sold 6500 tickets. Everywhere happens the same. And I think: See? I Told you! (Laughs). It ‘s cool because we’re taking a big production and we can take it everywhere because the enclosures are bigger and we have more money to move equipment. Now we can take everything we do in the United States to Europe. We want to go to Europe and show what we do!

With what agency you work now?
With CAA, as in the United States. We had Jon Jackson in Europe because they were doing all the great groups there, but then they did not fit too much with us.

When you have a big show on stage as you carry now.. does that distract you musically?
Today we were distracted because the sound was too low and these things infuriate me. The public’s response was very different when we started playing than when we finished. I heard and noticed that there wasn’t enough power coming out from the PA. I thought my mic was off until I realized what was happening. I noticed it because the explosions sounded much stronger than other nights, which means that the music is lower. It went well tonight, but tomorrow will be better.

So slowly we have been growing. Four or five years ago we started to bring video screens and then fire and such … Now we have reached a point where it is natural for us. It’s not that we’ve decided to spend a fortune on production spontaneously. When in 2000 we brought smoke machines people got shocked, but we wanted to be a theatrical band. And little by little we will be doing more things. We do not feel out of place with all this spectacle.

The good news is that you are not spoiled wimps. You give the feeling of being guys with their heads on their shoulders. Your ascension has been so slow that makes you really appreciate what you have.
Eleven years of growing up very slowly. Nobody buys you a house and gives you a check for ten million dollars for nothing. We have fans to play for and that’s what we’re going to continue doing. All that has been bittersweet. We achieved a number one but we lost our best friend. We are processing yet, because after all, Jimmy is not here.

But that made you guys come closer as a band.
You got that right. We’ve been good friends since forever, but when nothing goes wrong it’s easier to say “yes, we are best friends.” But when Jimmy died, we rubbed absurdity.

Yorkshire Evening Post Review Of Avenged Sevenfold’s Leeds Show

Following a hard hitting, heavy rocking opening from Hell Yeah the stage is cloaked in black and a full to bursting academy waits…

Suddenly there’s the unmistakable overture, the dark fabric drops to reveal a huge drumkit, and Nightmare begins as Mike Portnoy appears behind it and strikes.

The sound is excellent, the guitars wailing in unison and M Shadows’s vocals reminiscent of Iron Maiden’s signature style. Portnoy could play the drums in his sleep he is so awesomely tight.

“Leeds rocks!” proclaims M Shadows and the underwear landing on Synyster Gates’ microphone stand is playfully thrown back.

Gates stands centre stage bathed in a white blue light, as the mood turns to sexy rock ballad Buried Alive.

The transition into the heavy section is executed seamlessly. M Shadows silences the crowd’s chants with a tribute to the band’s previous drummer, The Rev, who died last year.

“We lost our best friend in December ’09, he happened to be our drummer as well. He was one of the best guys I know, friends with everyone on this stage. Here is a sad song for our dear friend.”

So Far Away captures the loss emotively and it is performed with great dedication and feeling.

Things hot up again with God Hates Us, Avenged Sevenfold having proved worthy co-headliner for the eagerly anticipated Stone Sour.

Avenged Sevenfold Talk Mike Portnoy’s Departure From Dream Theater

Classic Rock Magazine’s Dave Ling spoke with Johnny Christ about Mike Portnoy’s departure from Dream Theater and what it could mean for Avenged Sevenfold.

Avenged Sevenfold have no idea of whether, as has been widely speculated, Mike Portnoy will consider joining them as a permanent member following the drummer’s unexpected exit from Dream Theater.

Portnoy stepped into the breach to play on Nightmare, the Huntingdon Beach [California]-based group’s just released fifth album, after the death of their own drummer James ‘The Rev’ Sullivan last December. He’s pledged to tour with them for as much of the record’s live promotion as his schedule will allow. Only now he has more time on his hands than anyone suspected.

As the rock world tried to absorb the shock news of Portnoy’s decision to quit Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold bassist Johnny Christ exclusively told Classic Rock: “It’s been a crazy day for us. Mike made his announcement last night [September 8], and we’re as astounded as everyone else. We only found out ourselves via a conference call. As huge fans of Dream Theater it’s hard to imagine them without Mike Portnoy, but it was a decision that he had to make for himself at this point in his life. It didn’t have anything to do with us.”

Indeed, Portnoy has already issued a Facebook plea stating: “I BEG of the fans to please NOT to hold [Avenged Sevenfold] responsible for MY decision. I had been contemplating this and desiring a ‘break’ [not split] from Dream Theater as long ago as last year.”

So the question remains: Having revealed that he was having “More fun and better personal relations” with AX7 and the rest of his side-projects than with regular band-mates, is there any possibility that Mike Portnoy could make the position permanent?

“It’s too early to address that type of question,” sighs Christ. “All we know for sure is that Mike will be with us until the end of this year. We’re scheduling some more tour dates and given that he’s left Dream Theater we might be able to hold onto him a little longer. But we’ll have to see how that goes.”

Indeed, given the loss of ‘The Rev’, the band’s own long-term future is equally uncertain. Before the tour began, vocalist M. Shadows stated: “We’re not sure what’s going to happen after this touring cycle. Our goal right now is to just get kids to hear the record, because we want them to remember ‘The Rev’.”

However, with Nightmare having smashed its way straight to the top of America’s Billboard chart, Christ admits the band are beginning to consider a more fan-friendly outcome.

“The album’s success is starting to make us think like that,” confides the bassist, choosing his words carefully, “but we won’t know for sure until the end of this touring cycle. Trying to write again without ‘The Rev’… I just don’t know how that would feel. We’re still taking things one day at a time; the last thing on our minds is replacements.”

In related news, additional dates have been added to the co-headlining UK tour from Avenged Sevenfold and Stone Sour, which begins in Glasgow on November 26. Two shows will now happen at London’s Hammersmith Apollo, on October 30/31..

"Karya Terakhir The Rev" By Jawa Pos

Kematian drumer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan justru membuat kreativitas band tersebut semakin terpacu.

Hasilnya, A7X (julukan Avenged Sevenfold) mampu merilis album baru berjudul Nitghtmare.

Liriknya pun berisi banyak nada keputusasaan. Terutama sejak kematian The Rev.

Did You Know

Nama Avenged Sevenfold diambil dari salah satu petikan ayat Bible. Yaitu, Kejadian 4 Ayat 15. Artinya adalah pembalasan dengan tujuh kali lipat.

A7X baru meraup sukses besar ketika merilis album ketiga City of Evil (2005).

Logo The Deathbat milik A7X dirancang Micah Monrague.

Dia membawakan lagu Nothing to Say.

Album self-titled (2008) dinobatkan Kerrang! Magazine sebagai Album of the Year.

Avenged Sevenfold - Fiction

Now I think I understand
How this world can overcome a man
Like a friend we saw it through
In the end I gave my life for you

Gave you all I had to give
Found a place for me to rest my head
While I may be hard to find
Heard there's peace just on the other side

Not that I could
Or that I would
Let it burn
Under my skin
Let it burn

Left this life to set me free
Took a piece of you inside of me
All this hurt can finally fade
Promise me you'll never feel afraid

Not that I could
Or that I would
Let it burn
Under my skin
Let it burn

I hope it's worth it, here on the highway, yeah
I know you'll find your own way when I'm not with you

So tell everybody, the ones who walk beside me, yeah
I hope you'll find your own way when I'm not with you tonight

I hope it's worth it, what's left behind me, yeah
I know you'll find your own way when i'm not with you

So tell everybody, the ones who walk beside me, yeah
I know you'll find your own way when I'm not with you tonight

ALL TIME LOW Siap Konser di Indonesia

JAVA Musikindo kembali menambah line up konsernya tahun ini dengan mendatangkan band pop punk Amerika, yaitu All Time Low. Band asal Maryland, Baltimore, bukan band tanpa penggemar fanatiknya di Indonesia. Fansnya cukup banyak tersebar di berbagai kota di Indonesia, khususnya Jakarta.

Menurut Adrie Subono, pimpinan JAVA Musikindo, All Time Low termasuk band yg paling banyak diminta di jejaring microblog Twitternya. "Melalui twitter saya, mereka mengusulkan nama band All Time Low.

All Time Low dibentuk tahun 2003 yang beranggotakan Jack Bakarat (gitar), Alexander Gaskarth (gitar/vokal), Rian Dawson (drum), Zack Merrick (bass). Mereka telah meluncurkan 3 album yakni The Party Scene, So Wrong It's Right, Nothing Personal. Lagu mereka yg sangat popular dan akrab di telinga penggemarnya antara lain Dear Maria dan Count Me In.
Mayoritas fans fanatik All Time Low adalah anak remaja alias ABG.

Slash Akan Konser Di Jakarta 3 Agustus 2010

Harga tiket di hari show atau on the spot masing-masing VIP Rp1,000,000, Festival Rp700,000,- Tribune I Rp500,000,- dan Tribune II Rp 400,000.

Liric Lagu Nothing To Say - Slash Feat M.Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold)

We seem so lost and jaded
Well what a price to pay
It can't be overstated,
and you seem infatuated
with finding who's to blame.

While it can seem so hard now,
I got a feeling we ain't meant to live this way.

Don't tell me it's too late,
cause I feel it too, we all love to hate
and let others lead the way.

Some searching to find
That love (life?) with a new piece of mind.

And still we push further away,
Singing our songs of yesterday.
While so much still stands in our way,
Voices with nothing to say.

Some feel that life's a favour,
While some don't have the time.
Wash up and kiss the alter,
All hail the mighty father,
but love will keep you blind.

Same questions we keep asking,
Won't hear the answers cause we're scared of what we'll find

We try and compensate through our troubled faith that should keep us safe
and keep searching for a sign.

Some searching to find
That love (life?) with a new piece of mind.

And still still we march further away,
Singing our songs of yesterday.
While so much still stands in our way,
Voices with nothing to say.

There won’t be another day, the (no?) changing of the seasons,
And no one's gonna save us from the lies.

The greatest story ever told,
Is only what you make it.
There will be struggle and fear,
All by design

And still we march further away (We've been so logicated)
Singing our songs of yesterday (Nothing's got all the point, the blame?)
While so much still stands in our way (Yeahhhh!)
Voices with nothing to say

Synyster, kamu baru bergabung di Avenged Sevenfold (A7X) setelah album ‘Sounding the Seventh Trumpet’ (Good Life Recordings, 2001 – dirilis ulang oleh Hopeless Records, 2002). Bisa cerita kenapa?
Zacky Vengeance (ZV): Karena kami payah... hehe. Dia (Synyster) teman baik The Rev (dramer A7X).
What the fuck is that?’

Zacky Vengeance: 'If It Wasn't For Our Fans There Would Not Be Avenged Sevenfold'

Avenged Sevenfold guitarist Zacky Vengeance tells AOL's Noisecreep that when the band's drummer, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, passed away last year, the group was finished. "When we called each other and got the call that Jimmy had died, literally it all ended right there," Vengeance, whose real name is Zachary Baker, says. "Everything we've ever known as human beings, everything we've ever known as a band, changes at that moment, and you can't think clearly. You can't see anything, you can't talk, you can't make any sense of anything. It was just done. You don't care about music, there's just nothing."

As to what changed their minds, Zacky says, "I can honestly tell you if it wasn't for our fans, there would not be Avenged Sevenfold right now. The fans would send in hundreds and thousands of letters, and they'd make books begging us to keep going and thanking us for what we have done and honoring Jimmy. They held vigils all over the world. . . If it wasn't for them, we certainly wouldn't have had the strength to get back there and basically walk through the fire at the hardest time in our life."

Avenged Sevenfold recently tapped famed video director Wayne Isham to helm the clip for the band's new single, "Nightmare".

Wayne Isham, 52, is an American movie director who has directed music videos of many popular artists such as Metallica, Mรถtley Crรผe, Simple Plan, Pantera, 'N Sync, Shania Twain, Godsmack, Britney Spears, Leona Lewis, Pink Floyd, Sheryl Crow, Joss Stone, Madonna, Avril Lavigne, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi, among others.

"Nightmare" was the No. 1 most added track at Active Rock radio in the United States last month. It was also the No. 1 rock song on iTunes in the United States, selling over 23,666 units in its first day. Additionally, in the United Kingdom, "Nightmare" was the No. 1 rock song on iTunes. On the band's official web site, "Nightmare" premiered via a YouTube "lyric" Video that received over 275,000 plays in 24 hours.

The band will co-headline this summer's Uproar Festival tour with Disturbed, starting on August 17 in Minneapolis.

Avenged Sevenfold Drummer's Death Caused By 'Accidental Drug Overdose'

The death of Avenged Sevenfold member Jimmy Owen Sullivan was caused by an accidental drug overdose.

The drummer, nicknamed The Rev, passed away on December 28 2009 at his home in southern California at the age of 28.

At first Sullivan's death was ruled as inconclusive, but now according to Rolling Stone, toxicology reports suggest he suffered "acute polydrug intoxication due to the combined effects of Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Diazepam/Nordiazepam and ethanol."

Meanwhile, Orange County Deputy Coroner Mitchell Sigal revealed that Sullivan also had an enlarged heart, which was marked in the coroner's report as a "significant condition", and may have played a role in the drummer's death.

"To all of us who loved Jimmy, the only thing relevant about December 28 is that is the night we lost, too soon, a son, brother, friend and one of the most talented artists in the world," the band's manager Larry Jacobson said about the ruling. "Every day, his parents and sisters, and his brothers in Avenged Sevenfold smile at the many memories they have of Jimmy and his fans around the world revel in the musical legacy he left them."

Avenged Sevenfold decided to carry on as band following Sullivan's death, recruiting Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy to tour with the group this summer.

Biodata Avenged Sevenfold

Biografi

Terbentuknya Avenged Sevenfold

Avenged Sevenfold terbentuk pada tahun 1999 di Orange County, California. Album pertama mereka, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet direkam ketika mereka masih berumur 18 tahun. Album ini dirilis dengan label Good Life Recordings, tetapi setelah gitaris Synyster Gates masuk Avenged Sevenfold, album ini dirilis ulang dengan label Hopeless Records. Lagu "To End The Rapture" juga direkam ulang, kali ini ditambahkan dengan permainan gitar Synyster Gates.

City of Evil (2005-2007)

Avenged Sevenfold (2007-2008)

Live In The LBC & Diamonds in the Rough (2008-saat Ini)

Matt Shadows berkomentar, "Maiden are by far the best live band in the world and their music is timeless," dan "This also gives us a chance to expose this great song to some of our younger fans who maybe aren't as familiar with Iron Maiden."

- Ciri khas

- Mantan Anggota

* Dameon Ash — bass (2001 - 2002)
* Justin Sane — bass (2000-2001)
